How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the outside of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jump in the chain link of the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the best method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when the sensor is operating at its maximum. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the three that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start when the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. But i'm worried that I may have missed something. Let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU
