How to Replace an audi a1 key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test since there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Examine for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs. Three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - just put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. To do this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. They're cheap and easy to find especially if they're an Bosch unit like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues with your audi car key. It is an important part of the transmission in your Replacement Audi Key Fob because it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slowly the engine is turning. When this sensor fails, it can disrupt the performance of the transmission and the rest of the car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. It should show approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points. This is the same across the audi q5 key 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du You may also find them in wrecking yards.
