This is crucial because soils that are rich in nutrients provide a better environment for healthy and flourishing arabica plants, which produce higher quality coffee beans. It is important that the soil drains properly for arabica plants as it prevents the roots from becoming saturated and leading to diseases.

Additionally, a high altitude plantation site is less prone to being affected by pests and diseases. This is particularly true of the coffeeberry borer, which is an insect that can cause serious destruction to crops at lower altitudes.

The only alternative coffee that can compete in terms of quality at higher altitudes with arabica is robusta. Robusta is resistant to pests and thrives in warmer environments where arabica is struggling to survive. However, the taste of a robusta is not as distinct than that of an arabica. Thus, while arabica coffee beans in bulk does better at higher elevations however, consumers should still search for one origin or blend that contains both types of coffee when shopping for high altitude arabica.

Well-Draining soil

Arabica coffee plants are more tolerant to cooler temperatures and higher elevations than Robusta plants that thrive in warmer climates. These conditions allow the beans to mature more slowly which results in a more full body and more diverse flavor profiles.

The unique conditions that make high-altitude cultivation the ideal for arabica coffee plants result in the production of premium quality beans that are sought-after by specialty roasters and consumers. This is mostly because these conditions are conducive to the health of the plant and its productivity.
